How can technology and data help publishers identify new stories and emerging voices? As discussions about diversity and representation for minority communities become increasingly important in publishing, technology is the best possibility for finding emerging writers online. Moderated by Porter Anderson, Editor of Publishing Perspectives, this panel will feature a discussion with Ashleigh Gardner, Deputy General Manager, Wattpad Studios, Publishing; Sara E. Sargent, Executive Editor, HarperCollins Children’s Books; and author Lindsay Summers, whose story, The Cell Phone Swap, received nearly 100 million reads on Wattpad and was published as Textrovert in 2017. The panel will discuss how Wattpad--with its global community of more than 65 million people--is empowering minority voices to tell their stories to the world. As diverse communities increasingly find a home for their stories online, publishers need adopt a data-driven approach to help identify new voices and perspectives.
