Selected Booksellers to Receive Grant to Attend BookExpo and Experience the Nation’s Largest Publishing Industry Gathering

Norwalk, CT – February 14, 2019 – Today, BookExpo and the American Booksellers Association (ABA) announced the first Bestsellers Grant program. Part of a larger effort to reach new audiences and provide support to independent booksellers, the program invites new booksellers to experience BookExpo and engage with the publishing community at the nation’s leading industry event.

The program is open to booksellers who are either new to the business or who have not attended BookExpo in the previous five years. Selected booksellers will receive a $1,000 grant for their travel expenses to this year’s BookExpo event. The first round of grant recipients were notified at the end of January with notifications going out to the next round soon.

"This new initiative from BookExpo of outreach and support to bookstores that have not had a chance to recently attend the event -- and experience the new programming -- is a clear demonstration of their commitment to the independent bookstore channel," said Oren Teicher, ABA CEO. "This participation of new bookstores and others can only make BookExpo an even stronger event."

“We are always looking for ways to broaden BookExpo’s audience and bring in new attendees, so we are excited to work with the ABA this year to offer grants to up-and-coming booksellers who have not been able to attend BookExpo in the past,” said Jennifer Martin, Event Director, BookExpo. “We look forward to discussing their experiences after the show and using those learnings to improve and grow BookExpo in years to come.”

The Bestsellers Grant program continues an ongoing strategy to create more value for BookExpo Attendees and Exhibitors. Additional new features at BookExpo include a co-location with New York Rights Fair, ABA Editors’ Speed Dating, a stage dedicated to Independent Publishers and UnBound.

The recently announced UnBound at BookExpo, a new “show within a show”, will offer booksellers’ access to a curated range of complementary products to their core book business to address the growing need to expand their non-book offerings. The introduction of UnBound will enable buyers to source a variety of on-trend, unique and one-of-a-kind merchandise, along with the hottest new titles, under one roof.
