A gauntlet of agencies, publishing houses, distributors, media, and booksellers lies between any author and their potential readers. For children's and young adult literature by and about people of color, native people, disabled folk, queer and trans issues, and marginalized religions and cultures, the hurdles are even higher and more intricate. WNDB has brought together an author, an agent, an editor, and a bookseller to discuss the barriers and challenges diverse literature faces in making it to bookshelves and celebrate how some of these titles have successfully navigated the industry and are winning awards. What and how does the industry need to change to allow for greater success for diverse and Own Voices titles? What support can you provide to diverse stories? Panelists include: Marietta B. Zacker (Agent and Co-owner, Gallt & Zacker Literary Agency), Alvina Ling (Editor-In-Chief, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers), Sara Hines (Co-Owner, Eight Cousins Books), Beth Phelan (Agent, Gallt & Zacker Literary Agency), and Renee Watson (award-winning author).
