Norwalk, CT, June 2, 2010: BookExpo America (BEA) officials have released attendance numbers for this year’s convention which took place at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City, May 25 – May 27, 2010. For the first time, the convention has verified ALL attendees and exhibitor personnel at BEA thus providing a new number by which all future conventions will be measured. This overall verified number represents the actual number of people who came to the Javits Center from every constituent base. Previously, convention organizers verified attendees but did not verify exhibitors, relying instead on a total “registered” number for exhibitors.
“Moving forward, I think it is in the best interest of everyone who participates in BEA to have an attendance number that accurately reflects the activity at the show,” notes Steven Rosato, Show Manager for BEA. “Of course, we do realize that this makes it difficult to compare this year’s show with previous years, but this would have been the case under any circumstance since this year’s show was a day shorter. For instance, we were tracking ahead of last year until our final day when we suddenly had to make up for the shortfall of not having a third day to count attendance. That said, next year we will continue to release an overall ‘verified’ attendance number and this will be our new standard of measurement for the future.”
As noted, the total number of verified industry professionals in attendance at BEA in 2010 was 21,919. The number of verified attendees (i.e. all non-exhibitor participants including book buyers, press, licensing and rights professionals, non-editorial media, authors, film and TV production personnel, etc.) was 13,872. The number of verified exhibitor participants was 8,047.
For this year, and ONLY for the sake of comparison, organizers note that the number of registered visitors at BEA was 27,211. This number compares to 29,923 at BEA in 2009. This shortfall is largely attributable to the shortened schedule.
