BookExpo America, which will take place in New York City at the Jacob K. Javits Center, May 29 – June 1, 2013, is North America’s largest annual gathering of book industry professionals.

The Publishing Hackathon, which has already garnered considerable attention within the book and digital communities, was conceived as a way to bring technology, venture capital and publishing players together for the first time to address the challenge of book discovery in the digital world.  It is led by a group of major media industry participants including The Perseus Books Group, Librify, BookExpo America, AlleyNYC, and William Morris Endeavor (WME).

As noted, The Publishing Hackathon took place May 18th and 19th at the AlleyNYC, a digital co-working space. It attracted 200 people and over 30 different teams sought to develop new ideas for digital book discovery.  Six finalists were announced on Sunday, May 19th and now have ten days to refine their projects.  The finalists will receive coaching from publishing and technology mentors and will be on hand at BEA on Friday, May 31st at 12:30 to meet with industry professionals and demonstrate their work.

At 1PM on Friday, the finalists and the industry are invited to a panel discussion with successful venture capitalists and early-stage investors, moderated by Joanna Stone Herman, CEO of Librify, called Publishing Start-ups:  Navigating from Early-stage Investing to Successful Exit.

At 3PM on Friday, May 31st will be the Hackathon finals, moderated by Rick Joyce of Perseus Books.  Each of the final six teams will have five minutes apiece to pitch and demonstrate their final submissions on BEA’s Downtown Stage to a distinguished panel of judges and the audience.  The judges represent a cross section of publishing, technology and venture capital industries, and include:

  • David Steinberger, CEO of the Perseus Books Group and Chairman of the National Book Foundation
